How to record an engaging video for your quiz

Reading Time: 5 minutes

It’s well known that video has been the most engaging format preferred by businesses and brands for over a decade now, and its popularity is only increasing. Not surprising when you look at Wyzowl’s State of Video Report 2023, which states that 79% of people say they’ve been convinced to buy a product or service because of a video.

That’s why we incorporate videos into our Specialised Marketing Assessments. A video gives you the opportunity to gain trust and boost the chances of turning quiz leads into longstanding, loyal clients.

In this article, we’ll answer some of your burning questions about video, share our tips on how to shoot a hit rather than a flop. And, we’ll even share our basic script that you can edit and make your own for your video.

What is the video about?

The video enables you to speak directly to the client or prospect who has just taken your quiz. The purpose of the video is to explain the quiz taker’s results and what they mean. It is also a chance to establish your credentials, provide information about your business, and tell them why you are the best person to help them. But ultimately the video is focused on the quiz taker and creating a personalised, valuable and unique experience for them.

Why do I need to record a video?

Semrush’s State of Content Marketing 2023 Global Report shows that the highest performing content contains a range of different formats with video being the most powerful. Videos are more engaging than other formats, they make sure your message sticks and that the learning you provide goes in deeper.

We use the ‘talking head’ style of video in our quizzes, where the presenter talks directly to the camera, and by extension, the viewer. This adds a personal touch and speaks openly and honestly to the quiz taker about their specific goals, challenges, and pain points.

Do I need to be in the video?

Some of us were born to in the spotlight, others…not so much. However, you feel about being centre stage, if you can bring yourself to do it then you should, even if you think you’ll be terrible. Here’s why.

  • You’re the expert, the person who knows the most about your business and can speak about it with passion and authenticity. People can smell a scripted actor a mile off
  • Appearing in your own video might not get you into the Vanity Fair Oscars after party, but it does give you an air of authority. If a lead has previously seen you in your video, when they come to meet you they’ll see you as THE person with the knowledge they can trust. And they might just feel that extra bit special when they meet the ‘star’ of the video
  • It’s a lot cheaper to use yourself rather than pay an actor. Yes, your time is money, but it will most likely save you hundreds, if not thousands of pounds to be the star of your own show

When do I have to record the video?

‘Last, but not least’ as they say. Producing the video is usually the final step in building your quiz. We want to avoid wasting your time by having to do any re-records, so we make sure all parties are happy with every aspect of your quiz first. Especially the quiz outcomes and the calls to action (CTA), as these are what you will talk about in the video. By leaving it until last, we make sure what you’re saying in the video is aligned with the written components of the quiz.

Where should I record the video?

Your natural habitat is best. The place where you feel most comfortable, where you do your best work, within reason of course. If that place happens to ringside at a boxing match, we can help you find a more appropriate alternative. The idea is to let your prospects in to your world, to make them feel at ease and to familiarise them with you.

How do I record the video?

Your video is broken down into three parts:

  1. Results
  1. About you
  1. Call to action

You will need to record different versions of parts one and three for each possible quiz outcome. In the next section we will provide a basic script structure for you to edit and add to, so it is specific you to, your audience and their scores. First, here are our top tips to help you plan and shoot your video.

  • Don’t aim for perfection. Most of us aren’t polished presenters and it’s likely that we will mess up more than once when recording videos. That’s ok, simply pause, go back, and redo what you were saying. Our expert team will work their magic to make it professional and flawless in the editing process

  • Think about the environment. Make sure your background has limited clutter as this can be distracting

  • Shoot your video in landscape with you in the centre. This ensures you are the main focal point

  • Make sure the video file is high quality by using the largest file size possible

  • Sound quality is the most important aspect to get right so check your audio quality. We recommend using a lapel microphone that connects directly to your phone. These are available from Amazon and can be bought fairly cheaply

  • You may be the type who can give a natural and relaxed performance by speaking ‘off the cuff’ rather than reading from a script. If you can do this, you should still prepare a structure to stay focused on the main points and do a few dry runs before hitting record.

If, however you prefer to use a script you might find that a teleprompter will come in handy. We recommend using a teleprompter app on your computer or on your smartphone/tablet to record. Some tools you can try include.

  • The ‘Teleprompter for Video’ app, available for free on iPhone or android
  • VEED is a desktop tool that offers a free version, perfect for one off projects
  • Don’t use Zoom! The quality simply isn’t good enough for video
  • Keep it short, one or two minutes is perfect

Basic script structure

Part 1 – Results

As we mentioned above, you will need to record different versions of this part of the video for each possible outcome. The percentages given here are just a guide, your quiz outcomes may differ

Version A – For scores between 25% and 50%

  • “Thanks for taking the quiz”
  • “Your results are in, and your total score today is between 25% and 50%”
  • “From your self-identified score…” explain what their score is saying about their current situation
  • “On this page, you’ll find a summary of your score, along with the key areas that require improvement. I have provided personalised feedback for each key area along with easily actionable tips to help you meet your goals.”

Version B – For scores between 50% and 80%

  • “Thanks for taking the quiz”
  • “Your results are in, and your total score today is between 50% and 80%”
  • “From your self-identified score…” explain what their score is saying about their current situation
  • “On this page, you’ll find a summary of your score, along with the key areas that require improvement. I have provided personalised feedback for each key area along with easily actionable tips to help you meet your goals.”

Version C – For scores over 80%

  • “Thanks for taking the quiz”
  • “Your results are in, and your total score today is over 80%”
  • “From your self-identified score…” explain what their score is saying about their current situation
  • “On this page, you’ll find a summary of your score, along with the key areas that require improvement. I have provided personalised feedback for each key area along with easily actionable tips to help you meet your goals.”

Part 2. Introduction

  • “Hi, I’m … and…” tell them about yourself and why you’re the best at what you do

Part 3. Call to Action

Again, you’re going to need to record different versions of this part for the different outcomes of your quiz. This is because you want your quiz takers to receive the CTA that is best suited to them based on their quiz scores. Below is an example script if your CTA is to book a call

  • “I would love to invite you to book a call with me….”
  • “Benefits are…” let them know what they can expect from the call and what they will get out of it
  • “Click the link below to pick a time and date that works for you”

What happens after I record the video?

After you have recorded the video, you can relax and let our team work their magic. We will compile all the versions and embed the videos into your quiz so that when your prospect receives their results, they will see a professional and personalised video that speaks directly to them and introduces you as the hero they need.
